The Xunta through Portos de Galicia is working towards the Xacobeo 2021 with the Galician nautical associations and those of national scope to design strategies with which to promote the transits of nautical-recreational through the initiative ‘Sail the way’, to reactivate the nautical activity after the economic impact marked by the coronavirus.
The ‘Sail the way’ initiative was born in 2016 to promote the maritime route to Santiago de Compostela. Nautical clubs from the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia participated in this launch of the maritime route, grouped in the North Marinas collective.
‘Sail the way’ is a different way of doing the ‘Camino de Santiago’ by sea and it is the only sailing route that has the approval of the Archdiocese of Santiago. To obtain the accreditation that certifies the pilgrimage to Santiago, a minimum of 100 nautical miles must be carried out.
In the ports of North Marinas there is a network of stamping points for these credentials, which are in France, La Rochelle; in Gipuzkoa, Hondarribia; Saint Sebastian; Orio; Getaria; Mutriku; in Bizkaia, Getxo; Santurzi; Bermeo; in Cantabria, Laredo; Santander; in Asturias, Lastres; Gijón; in Galicia, Viveiro; A Coruña; Muxia; Muros and A Pobra do Caramiñal. In addition, North Marinas also organizes a group trip to publicize this pilgrimage by sea.
This year’s is the V edition of this voyage, it began on August 14 in Hondarribia and will last until tomorrow the 29th in nine stages, with a reduction by half in the number of participating vessels due to the covid-19, which that supposes a total of 12 sailboats. This year’s itinerary goes through Hondarribia; Bermeo, Bilbao, Santander, Gijón, Viveiro, A Coruña, Muros, A Pobra do Caramiñal and Vilagarcía.
